A 12-Year Old's Perspective

My son was bemoaning that fact that it was another Monday, and the start of another week of school.  He told me that it's getting easier to get up on Mondays but he wishes things were different at school. How so?

"I wish I could get comfortable, relax, and talk. You know, just like you do all day long." 

When I protested that I do more than that, and that it takes focus to do my work, he insisted that his statement got to the essence of what he saw me do as a coach.

This took me by surprise. Is this really what I do all day long?

My son is partially right. Coaching is a great fit for me and therefore, I am usually relaxed and comfortable when coaching. As for talking, I like to think that I listen first. Talking most often comes in the form of questions and hopefully, has more purpose than hearing the sound of my voice.

It might be an interesting exercise to ask your child to describe what you do all day long. Don't be surprised if you hear the truth in a new way.

What a refreshing perspective! Your son is very observant. I guess when a person really does love his or her job, it shows. Other people will eventually feel it, too. Honestly, being a perfect fit in your job is enviable. Not everybody is happy with where they are right now. Most of them are stuck with jobs that stress them out.
